SACRED HEART STATUE: This Friday, June 27, the Church celebrated
the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Many of you have been

admiring our new statue of the Sacred Heart in the Gathering Space by the
western windows. The statue was made in Spain this past winter, then
shipped across the Atlantic, finally arriving at Transfiguration last month.
The statue is the gift of Mr. Jack Peterfeso, who joined our parish last
summer when St. John’s Catholic
Church closed on the East Side. Jack
notes, “I’ve only been a member of three
parishes my whole life: St. Mary’s
downtown, St. John’s, and now
Transfiguration.” He and his late wife
had seven children, and he remembers
that the beautiful statues in the old
churches were an object of wonder to the
little ones. “For my family, the statues
of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph
and the other Saints were a focus,
something to look at while we prayed at
Mass.” Jack particularly loved the statue
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at St. John’s,
and approached Father Baer with an
offer to pay for a new statue. “When you
walk into a Catholic Church, it’s good to
see the statues,” notes Jack. It reminds
you that we are in the House of God.”
P.S. You will probably not be surprised to discover that Jack is also the
generous benefactor for the statues of Mary and Joseph in the Sanctuary of
our Church. These were fashioned in Italy, and will be placed in raised
niches in the months ahead. On behalf of Father Baer and all of us at
Transfiguration, I wish to offer our appreciation to Jack Peterfeso!
